Workshop on Biomedical Optics

Biophotonics and biomedical optics, a booming field of multidisciplinary research─June 6th - 8th 2017 | CERIMED, Campus of La Timone Hospital, Marseille.

The topic of the event is biophotonics and biomedical optics, a booming field of multidisciplinary research. The choice of the place, CERIMED, will favor the intervention of physicians (especially those who are present on the site of the La Timone hospital) using or likely to use optical technologies.

Understanding mechanisms of pathological developments such as cancer or non-invasive monitoring, as quantitative as possible, at the bedside of patients, are multidisciplinary fields of scientific research (medicine, pharmacy, biology, physics, applied mathematics, signal and image processing ...), to the major socio-economic stakes. In this context, among the conventional imaging techniques (RX, PET, MRI), photonic techniques allow functional exploration and/or monitoring, non (or mini) invasive and multi-scale.

They are currently experiencing significant growth, due to their flexibility of use and sensitivity. Thus, the anatomical and functional imaging of the cerebral cortex or the spinal cord, the imaging of hemodynamic processes for the study of neurovascular coupling, the monitoring of the development of pathologies (monitoring of newborns, detection of cancers), utilize the photonics techniques at the microscopic, mesoscopic and macroscopic scales.

The development of these unconventional imaging techniques poses problems both experimental and theoretical, these problems being very closely coupled and requiring close interaction with the medical community, in order to fully understand the stakes.

From a physical point of view, the problem of in vivo optical imaging is that of imaging in a highly diffusive and heterogeneous environment. More

A number of personalities in the field have already given us the pleasure of accepting our invitation:
