Established in 2003, Centrale Marseille became the most recent member of the Écoles Centrales Group in 2006.

Centrale Marseille was created by the merger of ENSPM (Physics), ENSSPICAM (Chemistry), ESM2 (Mechanics) in 2003 and later of ESIM (Engineering) in 2004. At the same time, Ecole Centrale is part of a long tradition in the education of engineers in Marseilles that dates back to the 19th century.
- 1891: Creation of the École d’Ingénieurs de Marseille (EIM)
- 1907: Creation of the École d'Électricité Industrielle de Marseille (EEIM)
- 1917: Creation of the École Supérieure de Chimie de Marseille (ESCM)
- 1959: Creation of the École Supérieure d’Ingénieur de Pétroléochimie et de Synthèse Organique Industrielle (ESIPSOI)
- 1959: Creation of the École Nationale Supérieure de Physique de Marseille (ENSPM)
- 1972: Creation of the École Supérieure d’Ingénieurs de Marseille (ESIM)
- 1990: Merger of ESCM and ESIPSOI and creation of the École Nationale Supérieure de Synthèses, de Procédés et d’ingénierie Chimiques d’Aix Marseille (ENSSPICAM)
- 1991: Creation of the École Supérieure de Mécanique de Marseille (ESM2)
- December 2002: Protocol signed by the Écoles Centrales, the Ministry of National Education and local authorities for the establishment of a new School, the École Généraliste d’Ingénieurs de Marseille as a first step towards creating the École Centrale Marseille.
- September 2003: establishment of the École Généraliste d’Ingénieurs de Marseille (EGIM as a fusion of ENSPM, ENSSPICAM, and ESM2): decrees dated 29 September 2003 and bylaws dated 4 October 2003.
- July 2004: integration of the École Supérieure d’Ingénieurs de Marseille (ESIM) into the École Généraliste d’Ingénieurs de Marseille (EGIM): decree dated 16 July 2004.
- November 2004: The Minister of National Education announces the establishment of the future École Centrale Marseille.
- May 2005: The Ecoles Centrales’ Accompaniment Committee makes plans for changing EGIM’s name: press release dated 16 May 2005
- March 2006: Signature of a Cooperation Agreement between the Universities of Aix-Marseille and EGIM.
- July 2006: Visit by the Deputy Minister, Ministry of Higher Education and Research to greet the first intake of Centraliens Marseillais.
- September 2006: EGIM changes its name to École Centrale de Marseille: decree dated 27 September 2006.
